Elizabeth Desruisseaux:

Rating:

One of Yamaha's latest initiatives in digital technology, the AvantGrand N1 offers an excellent alternative to an acoustic instrument. Though the difference between an acoustic instrument and the N1 is noticeable to an advanced player, Yamaha has done much to reduce these differences through its latest hybrid piano technology. While still fully digital, the N1 incorporates the complete action of a grand piano, allowing the sensation of playing the keys to retain the subtleties in weighting, tone and dynamic levels. The weighting of the keys of the digital piano is nearly equivalent to playing a real grand piano, a great accomplishment for the digital world.

The digital sound sampling used is that of Yamaha's full concert grand piano. The upper register commands a bright, clean sound rather than the tinny tone that can sometimes be expected from Yamaha instruments. One of the only faults of the instruments would be the sampling of the lower range, which comes across in a relatively muffled, even muddy sound. However, this may only cause difficulties with more advanced music and could be alleviated through careful pedal technique. Overall, the sampling sounds very good, and, as the latest in digital technology, is the best on the current market.
